We have a big vision: over the next five years we want to double our profits. It’s incredibly ambitious. But drive and ambition have got us to where we are today and we have no intention of slowing down now. Having such ambitious goals means we’re keen to attract the very best engineering graduates from around the globe. If you’re one of them, you’ll enjoy the outstanding support you need to fulfil your true potential.

About the IMI Critical Engineering Graduate Programme

We are looking for world class engineering graduates to join our exciting two year graduate programme.  The IMI Critical Engineering graduate programme follows a common structure across all three IMI Divisions but it is tailored to the specific requirements of the IMI Critical Division.  For the past 50 years IMI Critical Engineering have been one of the world's leading suppliers of bespoke, highly-engineering flow control solutions used in extreme operating environments.   This engineering heritage and expertise combined with our ambitious plans to double the size of our business by 2020 make a career with IMI Critical an exciting and rewarding opportunity.

We are looking for engineering graduates who will help us deliver our ambitious growth plans.  You will need to be mobile as necessary within your geographical region to ensure that you can make the most of the opportunities available. In return you can expect a carefully designed programme which will deliver challenging placements and formal learning to develop your engineering and general business skills from sales through to problem solving and effective communication.

You can find general information about the IMI plc graduate programme and the application process on the IMI plc website as well as stories from some of our recent engineering graduates.  The information on this site explains what you can expect from the IMI Critical Engineering Graduate Programme.

IMI Critical Engineering has launched its 2019 intake program and we are looking for graduates from the following countries:

What we offer

Our programme consists of an initial four week training programme with all IMI engineering graduates at our Birmingham, UK headquarters.  Following this you will undertake two 12 month placements which have been carefully identified to provide you with a challenging experience and a development opportunity based on real business need.  Your first placement will be in your home country and the second in another part of the IMI Critical Division.  Throughout the programme there are guidelines in place to ensure that you can take the knowledge and skills from each placement on to the next.

There are four main types of role – typically your first placement will be in Project Engineering or New Product Development and the second in one of the customer facing roles in Application Engineering or Project Management.

  • Project Engineering:
this role is working on the detailed engineering aspects to enable the delivery of customer projects.  You may also visit customers where a technical clarification meeting is required but the role is not predominantly customer-facing.

  • New Product Development:
this role is most likely to be working with an engineering and development team although it could be customer facing.  You would work on the design, prototype testing and qualifications of the new product as well as providing technical support in developing any calculation tools, training and documentation.  You may also be involved in carrying out market and customer analysis to understand the needs/trends of the market, industry and customer to develop the next generation of products.

  • Application Engineering:
the goal of the Application Engineer is to use our technical advantage to persuade our customers to choose our products and help drive customer specifications.  To do this you will be customer focused during the pre-sale stage providing complete unbiased application support and training our sales people.  You may also visit the customer to give presentations on the technical advantages of the products.

  • Project Management:
after we have received an order the project management team is the contact point with the customer.  They ensure that the project meets the delivery schedule and is on budget.  They communicate with the customer on any technical queries, documentation, delivery, commissioning and other project related details.

In addition there are core knowledge and behaviours which will underpin the learnings from your placements.  These cover areas such as health and safety; understanding of our business; understanding how engineering is integral to the business; effective communication; problem solving techniques; ownership of your own career development.

Career paths

Our graduates

"I work for IMI CCI as a graduate engineer and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to travel the world and learn so much along the way. In 2016, IMI CCI brought me to California where I worked for over a year on multiple projects designing severe service equipment for the Oil & Gas and Fossil Power industries. Since then, I have travelled to multiple countries including the United Kingdom, Poland, Czech Republic, and am now settled in Vienna, Austria for the year to learn and to assist in multiple projects in engineering, inside sales, and manufacturing. I am proud that I work for a company that encourages equal opportunities for all and that I have been able to collaborate and work with people from different disciplines and backgrounds. This experience and journey has helped me grow as an engineer and as a woman”.

“When I was in high school, I was always attracted to mathematics and physics, even though most of my friends were not so interested like me, I always had this connection with engineering.  When I had to decide whether to study engineering or not - I decided to go for it and try, because all these thoughts about being so good at some engineering things - gave me the motivation to start with the study of mechanical engineering! After so many years of studying for the Bachelors and then the Master of Energy Engineering, I am having now the opportunity to work with one amazing company called IMI.  I really love what I am doing, I am a graduate now in the company and currently I am learning a lot in IMI Bopp & Reuther, Germany.  I am learning a lot from engineering and also from sales, and this program has made me so happy because I am really growing a lot! I am very happy to continue with it and be part of this amazing place!”
